SEDATION DENTISTRY

In addition to routine analgesia and local anesthetics, Happy Smiles Dental offers sedation dentistry for painless dental procedures to residents of Clarksburg/Urbana, Maryland. Patients can rest assured under the care of Dr. Alireza Hamidzadeh, DDS, MS.

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is when certain medications are used to help people feel a sense of calmness and relaxation during certain dental procedures. When administered by Dr. Hamidzadeh at Happy Smiles Dental, the medication will allow you to remain relaxed, but still aware during your procedure. During sedation, you’re unlikely to experience any acute discomfort. Many patients will fall asleep during the procedure.

When is sedation dentistry used?

It can be useful for people who become frightened or anxious when going to the dentist. This is especially true of children who have badly neglected teeth which need a lot of dental work. Sedation is also useful if you have a severe gag reflex or very sensitive teeth. Some patients find sedation useful when they need more than one dental procedure but want to limit their appointments.

Is sedation dentistry useful for dentophobia?

Dentophobia is a term used to describe an acute fear of going to the dentist or having dental procedures performed. Dentophobia can be the result of prior traumatic experience at another dental office. The Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation reports that dentophobia occurs in about 30% of the population. Many people who suffer from dentophobia avoid going to the dentist unless it’s an emergency. Dental sedation can be very useful for them as well. Dr. Hamidzadeh offers the best standards in care for his patients at Happy Smile Dental.

Who can perform sedation dentistry?

It should only be performed by a professional who has undergone the specialized training required. The American Dental Association has specific standards and expectations for dentists offering sedation. The staff in the dental office also needs to be trained to monitor patients, and recognize problems. They’re also required to learn and be trained, in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). The office must also have specialized equipment on hand that monitors your blood pressure and oxygen levels. All of these requirements ensure patients remain safe during and after the procedure. Dr. Hamidzadeh in both Basic Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certified. At Happy Smiles Dental, he takes the utmost precautions for sedation.
